Macedon Ranges snakes spring into action

SNAKES have returned early from their winter hibernation, says a Melton snake catcher.

Per Thomsen said relatively full dams and an abundance of frogs were attracting copperheads.

He said he has made six call-outs in the Macedon Ranges this month.

“If you are hearing lots of frog calls, it’s safe to consider that copperheads are not too far away,” he said.

Mr Thomsen has responded to snake call-outs in Gisborne, Macedon and Woodend already this season.

“It seems a trend that snakes are coming out earlier every year, I picked up a tiger-snake in Melton in July,” he said.

Mr Thomsen said it was important to keep back yards maintained and not to frighten snakes.

“Look out for warning signs like over-excited dogs or even noisy Indian Myna birds, which get really anxious when they see snakes,” he said. People should never try to move snakes themselves.

Other tips include,

* Tidy yards and keep grass short.

* Block holes under fence lines.

* Fill in mouse holes often near chicken coops.

* Keep cats inside, they are known to bring snakes home.
